Ferry Scores is an independent, non-commercial project published by Graham Precey, based in Normandy, France. Contact: hello@ferryscores.com.

Using this site

By using Ferry Scores you accept these terms. If you don't accept them, please don't use the site.

What Ferry Scores does

We publish comparisons of ferry emissions, calculated from official published data using our own stated method.

We are an information service. We don't sell tickets, take bookings, hold money, or act as an agent for any ferry operator. We currently have no affiliate or commercial relationship with any operator, and we receive no payment that could influence what we publish. If that ever changes we'll say so plainly on the site.

How the figures are produced

Ferry Scores applies a published methodology to official and other identified source data to produce comparative rankings and estimates. The methodology involves judgements about matters including dataset scope, route distances, vessel inclusion and exclusion, allocation and comparability. We publish material methodology decisions, limitations and corrections on our Methodology page. Those decisions may change when better evidence becomes available.

What the figures mean, and what they don't

Please read this part if you intend to rely on anything here.

• They are estimates derived from annual reported data, not measurements of your sailing. Actual emissions vary with passenger and freight load, weather, speed, route conditions and vessel deployment.
• They depend on inputs we don't control, including operator-reported data and route distances, and on the judgements described in our methodology.
• A ranking is a comparison within a defined scope. It compares the included vessels under the stated method and dataset. It is not a claim that any vessel, operator or crossing is environmentally beneficial, sustainable, harmless or good for the environment.
• Comparative words are comparative. Terms such as "lower", "higher" or "more efficient" describe a position within our published comparison, not an absolute environmental quality.
• We measure a limited thing. Our comparisons address the specific emissions measure described in our methodology. They are not a full environmental or lifecycle assessment of a journey, vessel or operator.
• Carbon information is one factor among many in a travel decision, and nothing here is professional, legal, financial or safety advice.

Corrections

We use reasonable care, published source data and a consistent stated method. Source data can still be incomplete, delayed, revised or open to interpretation.

If you think a figure is wrong, tell us. Email hello@ferryscores.com with the page, the vessel or route, what you're challenging and any supporting evidence. We review substantiated challenges properly and correct material errors promptly. We'd rather be corrected than be wrong. We may keep a note of a change so corrections are visible, and we may suspend or remove disputed content while we look into it.

Booking with operators

When you choose a crossing we link you to the ferry operator's own website. Your contract is with them, on their terms. We're not a party to it and we're not responsible for their site, prices, availability or service.

We can't guarantee which vessel will operate your sailing. Vessel assignments can change, so the vessel you ultimately travel on may differ from the one you viewed on Ferry Scores. You should confirm sailing times, fares, vehicle, accessibility, pet and documentation requirements directly with the operator.

Other sites we link to

We link to operator websites, data sources and reference material. We don't control them and aren't responsible for their content or availability.

Operator and vessel names

Operator and vessel names are used to identify the services being compared. We're not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any operator, and we don't claim rights in their names or marks.

Our content

The site contains original Ferry Scores text, design, analysis and presentation, alongside source data and other third-party material. Original Ferry Scores material may be protected by copyright and other intellectual-property rights. Rights in underlying source data and third-party material remain with their respective owners.

You may quote from and link to Ferry Scores with attribution - we'd like you to. You may not copy the site wholesale, scrape it systematically, or republish our comparisons as your own work.

Fair use of the site

Please don't attempt to disrupt the site, gain unauthorised access, or place unreasonable automated load on it.

Availability

This is a small independent project provided free and in good faith. We don't guarantee the site will always be available or uninterrupted, and we may change or withdraw any part of it.

Liability

We take reasonable care in preparing the site, but we cannot guarantee that all information will always be complete, current or error-free. To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for losses caused by matters outside our reasonable control, including changes made by ferry operators or errors in third-party source information.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Changes

We may update these terms. Significant changes will be noted on the site.

Governing law

These terms are governed by French law. This does not remove any protection you have under the mandatory consumer law of your country of residence, and does not affect your right to bring proceedings in the courts of that country where the law allows.
